The NH 596 was an EMD H16-44 locomotive, part of the H-series produced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD). The H16-44 was a versatile road switcher, used for both freight and passenger service. It featured a 16-cylinder diesel engine, generating 1,600 horsepower.
